Reliant Chooses OpenSolaris for its Managed PCI System
SAN FRANCISCO -- CommunityOne Developer Conference -- May 5, 2008 - Reliant Security announced today that it has chosen the OpenSolaris(TM) operating system for its Managed PCI System due to its lower cost, superior technology and robust security. In this latest demonstration of Sun's innovative technology as well as commitment to open source, the network virtualization capability of OpenSolaris is being leveraged to improve Payment Card Data Security for merchants who are required to meet challenging Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security standard requirements.
Reliant’s Managed PCI System (“MPS”) is a cost-effective solution for implementing PCI controls in remote Merchant locations such as stores. Implementing PCI data security controls in store systems is a source of frustration for many Merchants. New store systems requirements, including wireless networks, productivity applications, Voice over IP and guest access are falling into the scope of PCI, while security controls around these technologies have tightened. Traditional solutions for PCI compliance require complex and expensive integration of proprietary devices and software. MPS replaces complex multi-vendor security and networking solutions with a single low-cost appliance to meet PCI and store systems requirements in an integrated solution.
“Reliant made a strategic decision to base the MPS product on OpenSolaris because Linux didn’t meet our security requirements and system resource constraints. With support of the OpenSolaris Community, we have been able to meet a very aggressive production rollout of MPS and are proud to participate in the launch of the first community distribution of OpenSolaris” said Richard Newman, managing partner of Reliant Security.
Project Crossbow, the OpenSolaris network virtualization project, is the next step in the evolution of the Solaris networking stack and brings bandwidth resource control and virtualization to the architecture itself instead of the usual add-on layers which contribute to overhead and complexity. "It was the leading-edge network virtualization features that drew us to OpenSolaris" continued Newman. "OpenSolaris provides the right balance of cost, functionality and resource utilization. Project Crossbow enables virtual network devices that allow us to allocate virtualized IP stacks and deliver QoS within our solution."
"Before Solaris(TM) was open source, Reliant Security wouldn't even have known about technology advancements until their official release," said Bill Franklin, vice president, Solaris Core Engineering at Sun Microsystems. "By participating during development, partners like Reliant can influence the direction of Solaris technology to the benefit of their products and customers. Through the community at OpenSolaris.org, their engineers can directly communicate with other developers to provide early feedback on features and help to resolve problems. It is a win-win situation."
